A high-pitched, whistling sound produced in the chest during breathing, caused by narrowing of the airways. It is a feature of asthma, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pulmonary oedema. Inhalation of a foreign body may also be a cause. (See also breathing difficulty.)
