A class of drugs used in the treatment of diseases, including HIV infection, that are caused by retroviruses. The drugs affect the ability of the virus to reproduce by blocking reverse transcriptase, a key enzyme. Drugs include lamivudine, zidovudine (AZT), efavirenz, and stavudine.
