A colourless gas, sometimes called laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is used with oxygen to provide analgesia (pain relief) and light anaesthesia (see anaesthesia, general). Adverse effects of nitrous oxide and oxygen may include nausea and vomiting during the recovery period.
