Glycerol

A colourless syrupy liquid that has a sweet taste. Glycerol is prepared from fats and oils; it is an essential constituent of triglycerides (simple fats). In rectal suppositories, glycerol relieves constipation by softening hard faeces. Glycerol is used in moisturizing creams. It is also used in eardrops to soften earwax and in cough remedies to help soothe a dry, irritating cough.
