Enterotoxin

A type of toxin released by certain bacteria that inflames the intestinal lining, leading to diarrhoea and vomiting. Enterotoxins cause the symptoms of staphylococcal food poisoning (see staphylococcal infections) and cholera. (See also endotoxin; exotoxin.)
