Endarterectomy

An operation to remove the lining of an artery affected by atherosclerosis, restoring normal blood flow. Endarterectomy is used to treat cerebrovascular disease and peripheral vascular disease. The procedure can be performed endoscopically (see endoscopy) or by open surgery. New lining grows in the artery within a few weeks of surgery. When narrowing is widespread, arterial reconstructive surgery may have to be performed.
