Cretinism

A congenital condition characterized by stunted growth and failure of normal development, and, in infants, coarse facial features. Cretinism results when the thyroid gland fails to produce or produces insufficient amounts of the thyroid hormone thyroxine at birth. Replacement therapy with thyroxine is a cure, provided the condition is recognized early. (See also hypothyroidism.)
