A powerful, short-acting loop diuretic drug used to treat oedema (fluid retention) resulting from heart failure, nephrotic syndrome, or liver cirrhosis. It may be given by injection for emergency treatment of pulmonary oedema. Adverse effects can include rash and muscle pain.
